In a series of new year's projects, Korea Railroad Research Institute is pushing ahead with another research of 'Next Generation of High Technology Development for the Urban Transit' for the period of six years from 2005 to 2010.

Designed to take up technical skills while providing safer transportation services, the project is broken down into two segments; 'Next Generation of Urban Train Vehicle System' and 'Personal Rapid Transit(PRT) System'.

Compared with the existing electric vehicles, the Next Generation of Urban Train Vehicle excels in terms of safety, technology and maintenance.

The speed got boosted by well over 30 percent to 130¡140km/h and it is easier to make or break the units of the vehicle depending on passenger volume by the hour and or by the day. Drastic cuts on electric power and maintenance are evident.

Introduction of a "Video Image Detection System" secures the passager in safety by preventing possible suicidal attempts. Included in core parts of the vehicle is a function of preventive diagnosis technology to enhance safety and maintainability. The new system is expected to herald the advent of the commercialization of artificial Intelligence(AI) urban transit vehicles.

In the meantime, the apparent alternative of transportation means PRT costs only a third of Light Rail Transit in construction and is envisioned to bring about improvements in lines, operation types, carriage volumes and speed.

PRT has been initially designed to run unmanned and the flexibility of laying rails is well suited for newly-borne cities. It also offers a convenient service of taking the passager door-to-door 24 hours.

Upon successful implementation of the research, the new project is to contribute to the urban rail transit with better transportation services. The environment-friendly system is likely to make a strong foothold to fit the demands of operation speed and carriage capacity as well in the future.
