The nation’s one of flagship projects, high speed railway(Hanvit-350) has been completed after 11 years of research and development led by Korea Railroad Research Institute to become the 4th country in the world with the development of high speed train. The homegrown bullet train is to serve the commercial track in 2009.
Set out in 1996, the mega project was officially put to an end and its achievements were announced at Kwangmyeong station in December 27, 2007.
The system of the high speed train has been verified and evaluated to have attained the high standards of technology stability and advancement, placing Korea on the third position in the world to have the HSR system over 300km/h followed by France, Japan and Germany.
KRRI researchers involved in the project took responsibilities for the design, building technology and technology for functionality evaluation. The system boasts 2.5MW propulsion control device based upon large-capacity of IGCT. Acknowledged of its superiority and functions, the HSR system was selected as one of top 10 new technologies of Korea in 2003 and received the grand prize at the Korea Tech Exhibition in 2006. Stretching the glory, the system was also awarded as the first core technology of the nation in 2007.
Hanvit-350 is expected to trigger overseas marketing as a driving force for the nation’s railway industry with plans to participate in the Turkish purchasing bid for high speed train early in 2008 for starters and to propose to Brazil for the country’s major vehicles in the construction of high speed railway.
