Introduction
KRRI has been established in order to contribute to the development of state and business industries through continuous R&D in the fields of railroad, public transportation, logistics, and the spreading of its work. -

Primary Functions
- R&D on high-speed railroad, general railroad, urban railroad, and light-weight subway systems
- R&D on next-generation public transportation systems
- R&D on railroad safety, standardization, railroad policy, and logistics technology
- R&D on transcontinental railroad systems between the two Koreas (North and South)
- R&D on core technologies for a nation-wide transportation system (including railroad, public transportation, and logistics)
- Cooperation, support, and technology commercialization with small-and medium-sized enterprises and other business groups in the industry

- Goal: Leading the 4th industrial revolution of railway technology through robust research and innovative ecosystem

- Expansion of public interactive research and strengthening cooperation among railway operation and construction organizations
- Establishing researcher focused R&D innovative ecosystem with autonomy and responsibility
Organization
- Reformed the institute that focuses on consumer/convergence technology for new transportation, high-speed trains, urban trains, logistics transportation, qualification test, etc.(May. 2011)
- Changed from project/specialty-focused institute to convergence- and goal-focused organization with more flexibility
- Strengthened organization efficiency by reducing department-level groups on a large scale (6 head offices 8 divisions, 1 research lab) - As a new project/mission-type (small but strong) research institute, it was reorganized to the Green Transportation Logistics System Engineering Research Institute (Nov. 2011)
- The Technology Commercialization Center was newly organized into CBO-type professional organization to enhance the technology commercialization and its result diffusion (June. 2014)
- As of 2018, the organization is rearranged by research fields to strengthen development of future fundamental technologies in response to the 4th industrial revolution
